What is Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)?

World Wide Web ConsortiumHTML is a formatting language used by web browsers to dynamically format web pages. Originally evolving from the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) it follows many of the markup conventions used in the publishing industry. HTML is not a programming language as such, but rather a markup language; it was never intended to control all aspects of document layout, more to format the content of a page. The syntax it uses is to wrap tags identified by keywords in angle brackets at each end like this <title>.

A Brief History of the Joomla CMS

joomlaBuilding a website these days usually involves a content management system.  Content and presentation are separate entities in a CMS; this is achieved by using a collection of scripts.  The content is actually held in a database and used to populate the page when it is called by a browser.  Two separate but interconnecting elements are therefore required by a CMS; the database and a method of getting the content from it.  There are a number of technologies available to do this, but Joomla uses MySQL and PHP in tandem to put the content on the pages and make them visible.
Versatility
The popularity of content management systems can be attributed to its flexibility; anyone, with or without experience can create and edit a website with one.  Permissions can be set by an administrator to grant access to editors who can add or change information on webpages.  In addition, levels of access can be granted so that the editors only have access to certain parts of the site.  Content management systems released under the GNU licence are free to use — another big benefit to users.

Who Are You Marketing Your Website To?

Article iconHaving a basic understanding of the type of person who is likely to visit your web site is very important because that information can help you tailor your site to suit them.  As a result, you may gain additional visitors who return time and again for more information.

What are the demographics of your audience? What age group do they fall into, and what type of purchases are they likely to make?  Someone not familiar with garden design might linger on a site about general gardening, whereas a professional botanist may dismiss the very same site for being too general. Similarly, an ordinary visitor may hurriedly leave a site filled with astronomical data but an astrophysics graduate will probably find that same site interesting.
